BaseballBaseball has a strong tradition in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands. We have a proud history of hosting spring training for professional baseball teams, as well as numerous youth and collegiate tournaments. As of February 2009, the Tampa Bay Rays, 2008’s American League champions, relocated spring training to the newly renovated Charlotte Sports Park. The Charlotte Stone Crabs, the High-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, also make the Sports Park its home turf in April 2009. On days without games, ball players to recharge and explore Charlotte Harbor’s visitor amenities such as outdoor adventures, world-class fishing, 28 miles of beaches and some of the best golf in Southwest Florida. In addition, college teams representing NCAA and Junior Colleges from across the country flock to tournaments in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands, including the 2010 2nd Annual Snowbird Baseball Classic. Twenty-one Division III and four Division I colleges match up to play spring ball February 28-March 20, with multiple games daily.
